德國醫生人數在過去10年增加了5萬多人，可是許多地區還是醫護人員嚴重不足，而且偏遠地區的醫師年齡多數逾50歲，年輕醫生不願下鄉，可能後繼無人。

德國醫師組織的資料顯示，在1980年代，德國醫師和人口的比例是每452個居民有1名醫生，到了2013年的比例是每230個居民就有1名醫生；不過，城鄉間的差距很大，大都會區以漢堡為例，每151個居民就有1名醫師，在布蘭登堡邦就是276個居民才有1名醫生。

近年來德國也引進了更多外國醫生，一些偏遠地區的醫院請不到德國醫生，就只好靠外籍醫生來服務鄉里。10年前在德國行醫的外國醫生只有萬人上下，現在已經增加到3萬多人。

德國聯邦統計局的資料顯示，過去20年德國女性醫生年年增加，占全體醫生的比例由1991年的34%增加到45%。許多女性醫生為了兼顧家庭只擔任半職工作，所以，也降低了醫療人力。(中央社)
