英格蘭隊長吉拉德退出國家隊　全力為利物浦

英格蘭中場名將吉拉德(Steven Gerrard)昨晚宣布退出國家隊，留下14年出賽114場、進21球紀錄，他透露是和前輩貝克漢(David Beckham)商議後才做此決定，本周才告知國家隊總教練侯吉森(Roy Hodgson)，主要原因是已高齡34歲，身體雖未老化，但想更集中心力幫助母隊利物浦。
 
吉拉德說：「我在國家隊能先後和眾多才華洋溢的隊友共同奮戰，又能擔任隊長，已經實現兒時夢想。退出國家隊經過漫長而痛苦考慮，是我生涯18年來最困難的決定，我聽了所有親朋好友、隊友的意見，我認為這決定是正確的。」
 
他表示自己並不是因為世界盃而下決心：「我主要是考慮年齡。我依然健康，但為了有更多心力能幫助利物浦爭奪英超或歐冠。在接下來2~4年，退出國家隊有助於維持身體狀態，特別是這季踢完我又要和球會續約。我一直想在世界盃結束後和侯吉森談談，但我仍然因為世界盃小組出局而沮喪，我需要時間確定自己是出於理智，而非一時衝動做決定。」(王毓健／綜合報導)
