瑞士0：1惜敗阿根廷無緣八強，老教頭Ottmar Hitzfeld退休前的最後一戰留下遺憾，其實他是忍著痛失至親的打擊帶兵。

瑞士與阿根廷的比賽前，Hitzfeld81歲的兄長因血癌過世，瑞士國家隊發言人賽前Marco von Ah賽前表示：「他非常難過，但仍會堅守崗位帶領球隊奮戰。」

瑞士並未配戴黑色臂章出戰，而兄長過世的詳細細節，發言人並未多作說明：「希望大家尊重他的隱私。」

這場十六強戰結束後，Hitzfeld也透過Marco von Ah告訴記者們，希望不要提問有關兄長過世的問題。

國家隊成員知曉此事，並表示哀悼，賽後Johan Djourou就說：「對他來說肯定很煎熬，但我要說的是，他展現了真正的領導能力，他可以為他帶領國家隊的表現感到自豪。」

中場Gelson Fernandes指出，教練並沒有提到兄長的事情，但大夥都知道，且非常想為教練拿下這一場勝利。
