雖然Ángel Di María是進球功臣，但Lionel Messi功不可沒，難掩鋒芒的表現，也獲選阿根廷與瑞士之戰的單場最佳球員，且已是4度獲選。

此役雖無進球，但Messi精彩的突破傳球演出，讓接應的Di María打進致勝一球，展現穿針引線的功夫，皇馬與巴薩隆納兩大球星聯手將阿根廷帶進八強。

「我不知道我是否值得這個獎項，重要的是我們挺過來了。」Messi說，因為比賽中一直未能進球，球隊遇到不小的挫折。

他指出，世界盃裡頭沒有一隊好打的對手，不容許在心態有所鬆懈，「當我拿到球的當下，我覺得有機會射門，但我看到Ángel在那裡後，我決定傳球。」

目前他4次單場最佳球員，已是本屆世界盃之最，也證明Messi核心人物的地位，雖也暴露他狀況好壞牽動著阿根廷的命運，但目前看來他的狀況不需要令人擔心。
