Japan-based vendors are expected to ship 34.7 million digital cameras in 2015, decreasing 20% on year, according to Japan's Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA).
The expected shipments will consist of 21.7 million consumer digital cameras and 13 million DSLRs, slipping on year by 26.7% and 5.8% on year, respectively, CIPA said.
In particular, Japan-based Canon shipped 15.39 million digital cameras in 2014, 3.8% short of its target of 16 million units. Of the shipments, 9.03 million units were consumer models and 6.36 million were DSLRs. Canon expects shipments in 2015 to drop on year by 7.7% to 14.2 million units, of which 7.8 million units will be consumer models and 6.4 million DSLRs.
According to industry sources in Taiwan, Japan-based vendors are expected to reduce overseas ODM production and increase in-house production due to depreciation of the Japanese Yen, putting pressure on Taiwan-based digital camera ODMs.
