在加拿大日前舉行的第六屆UNESCO國際地質公園大會上，張家界世界地質公園順利通過聯合國教科文組織的『大考』。這標志著張家界原先獲得的『黃牌』警告已被摘掉，將繼續保持世界地質公園網路成員資格。

根據新華網報導，2012年，世界地質公園網路執行局決定給予張家界世界地質公園延期兩年的有效期再進行評估，並提出10條改進建議，對公園保護與利用工作亮出了『黃牌』。

今年8月3日至5日，聯合國教科文組織專家阿圖•薩、中田世津谷一行，對張家界世界地質公園進行了嚴格『大考』。期間，兩位專家除了聽取張家界世界地質公園近兩年的工作報告外，還赴張家界世界地質公園博物館、袁家界園區、金鞭溪園區、黃龍洞園區等社區間合作基地，實地檢查景區管理、基礎建設、地質遺跡保護等工作，察看公園落實世界地質公園網路評估局2012年度評估所提出的整改建議情況。

張家界世界地質公園於2004年2月13日獲聯合國教科文組織批准，成為首批世界地質公園。近兩年來，張家界世界地質公園針對『黃牌』警告，嚴格落實整改意見，累計投入2億元人民幣資金用於地質遺跡保護工作。經過整改，張家界世界地質公園各項旅遊事業得到了蓬勃發展。
