大聯盟避免優秀年輕好手被埋沒在小聯盟，年滿19歲簽約在小聯盟待滿4個球季，未滿19歲在小聯盟待滿5個球季，必須被放進40人名單。若未放進40人名單，其餘球團可在年底規則5選秀指名，只要付給原球隊5萬美元(約150萬台幣)，但條件是該名球員隔年必須整季放在25人出賽名單中。若新球團認為該球員不如預期，可以退還原隊，並拿回2.5萬美元。
 
旅美左投王維中原效力海盜，但去年被釀酒人以規則5選秀指名，搭上直達大聯盟的特快車。當然，前提必須通過春訓考驗，才有機會在釀酒人大聯盟登板，否則還是有可能被送回海盜繼續磨練。
