歷經9年等待，俄羅斯為印度改裝的新一代航空母艦「維克拉馬迪特雅號」(Vikramaditya)預定本(11)月稍晚交艦。

由於印度海軍現役航艦維拉特號船齡高達60年，因此印度海軍尋求新航母戰力汰換舊航母。計畫在2015年左右建立以3艘航空母艦作為核心的遠洋艦隊，其中1艘為購自俄羅斯二手航母、2艘為國產航母。

2004年時，印度與俄羅斯簽約購買因為鍋爐爆炸，俄方無力負擔維護費用的航母戈爾什科夫號（印度更名為「維克拉馬迪特雅號」），原定2008年左右加入印度海軍服役，不過由於蘇聯解體後造船廠專業維修技師大量流失，導致修復工程一再拖延，更讓維修費用飆漲至23億美元。

更糟的是，維克拉馬迪特雅號在2012年6月海試時鍋爐再度故障，使得交船時間再度受到拖延。氣極敗壞的印度海軍因此下最後通牒，要求俄方不得晚於2013年底前交船。

維克拉馬迪特雅號排水量4萬5000噸、最大航速32節，航速18節時續航力1萬3500浬。
