在17世紀光學顯微鏡發明後，微米（micrometer）等級的物體如細菌、血球等，就能映在人類眼前。來到20世紀初，電子顯微鏡的問世，更讓人類能看見奈米（nanometer）大小的物體，例如與病毒與蛋白質分子，成為生命科學的研究利器。

明明電子顯微鏡就可以觀察到奈米等級，為什麼科學家還要追求解析度更高的光學顯微鏡？

原來，電子顯微鏡無法觀察活的樣品，限制了科學家的觀察。光學顯微鏡的研發，也一直難以跨越微米尺度的極限。直到「超解析螢光顯微鏡」的出現帶來新的契機，活細胞的奈米物體變化終於在顯微鏡下現形。這項發明也獲得2014年諾貝爾化學獎的肯定……點此閱讀全文
