民進黨立委蔡其昌今天上午召開記者會，宣布參選台中市長，立委周美琴、李昆澤當主持人，還有立委管碧玲、田秋堇、陳其邁、陳明文等人站台壯聲勢，大批台中市議員也到場，現場還有提詞機，宛如總統造勢規格。

蔡其昌強調，他起步較晚，因為尊重政治倫理，等到民進黨前秘書長蘇嘉全宣布不選，他才正式宣布參選；他強調自己有執行力，在地成長、出生，比黨內對手林佳龍年輕，有信心贏得初選，也會贏得最後選戰。
