南投市振興巷一處老舊平房民宅，晚間7時許突然冒出發熊熊大火，屋主廖姓老翁（64歲）的妻子先自行逃出，廖翁和他的小兒子廖信樺（30歲）受困二樓加蓋的鐵皮屋中，後來廖翁亦逃出，但廖信樺仍受困。

廖翁向警消表示，當時正在一樓廚房用油鍋炸油條，未料疑似油鍋溫度過高，突然冒出大火、一發不可收拾還向二樓竄燒，他試圖關瓦斯自行滅火無效，倉惶逃出所幸沒受傷，廖妻則說，逃出屋外時隱約聽見二樓傳出小兒子的呼救聲：「火燒厝喔！救人喔！」但只能無助地雙手合十祈禱兒子平安脫險。

消防隊員撲滅火勢後進入火場搜尋，晚間9點多在1樓地面尋獲廖信樺屍體，已被燒成1具焦屍，並研判係1樓天花板被燒坍、屍體從2樓掉落1樓，檢方指示先保留現場進行調查。(高堂堯／南投報導)
