世界盃最後一役，英格蘭勝場未能開胡，最終0：0與哥斯大黎加踢和，就此告別巴西，而哥斯大黎加以分組第一晉級到十六強。

2014年世界盃D組賽事全部結束，哥斯大黎加2勝1和以分組第一晉級，另一邊同時開打的烏拉圭與義大利之戰，烏拉圭1：0獲勝，2勝1敗取得分組第二前進十六強。

這是哥斯大黎加繼1990年義大利世界盃後，隊史再度晉級到十六強，也是第一支晉級的中北美洲球隊。

哥斯大黎加十六強要面對的對手，最有可能在希臘與象牙海岸的對決中產生，英格蘭從1994年美國世界盃進不了會內賽之後，連續四屆至少踢進十六強，這次卻早早在小組賽淘汰。
