做為一國的首都，札格雷布顯得過於低調，或許是因為亞德里亞海沿岸的古城和世界文化遺產，吸引了多數人的眼光，使得許多人若想要在有限的一、兩天內認識克羅埃西亞，都會直接略過札格雷布。
若與周邊的奧地利、匈牙利等國家的首都維也納、布達佩斯相比，札格雷布規模上顯得小巧玲瓏，就城市外觀來說也顯得年輕許多，主要是因為一八八○年的一場大地震，讓札格雷布內許多古老建築受到破壞，經過清一色新古典主義風格重建後，有了新的樣貌。

許多人覺得札格雷布缺少值得一訪的文化遺跡或歷史建築，讓這個地方在東歐地區的城市亮度顯得黯淡不少。我卻覺得，就因為失去了背負古城、千年遺跡的包袱，札格雷布比起逐漸老去的維也納多了更多活力，更少了因為過於觀光化所帶來的吵雜喧囂，多了分城市間難得可以感受得到的人情味。

若斯普利特、杜布羅夫尼克等亞德里亞海沿海千年古城，訴說的是關於克羅埃西亞融合了羅馬、威尼斯、拜占庭、奧匈帝國等文化的過去，那麼札格雷布所體現的，是現代克羅埃西亞純粹從自主的立場，想對全世界宣告自我的地方。
